I know you’ll cry for me.
How could you not?
We loved each other. We shared a life, a history, a thousand things that only the two of us understood.
So, cry when you need to.
Miss me when you miss me.
Say my name. Talk about me. Tell the stories.
But please don’t let all of your memories of me become sad ones.
I was more than the day I died.
I was every laugh we shared. Every conversation. Every stupid little thing we thought was funny. Every place we went. Every memory we made. Every time we showed up for each other.
I was a whole person who loved you very much.
And if I could ask anything of you now, it wouldn’t be to stop grieving me.
It would be to keep remembering me as I was when I was here.
Remember my laugh.
Remember the things that drove you crazy about me.
Remember the good times and the hard ones.
Remember how much we lived before you ever had to learn how to live without me.
There will always be tears. I know that.
But I hope, with time, there will be more smiles mixed in with them.
Because when you think of me, I don’t want you to only remember that I died.
I want you to remember that I lived.
And most of all, I want you to remember how very much I loved you.
If these words connected with you, you’ll find many more like them in What Remains. It’s a collection of the writings I’ve shared over the years, bringing together reflections on grief, love, loss, and the connections that continue long after someone is gone.
I hope it brings you comfort, understanding, and the reminder that you’re not alone.
